QANTAS has stood down two pilots after a Boeing 767 landing in Sydney came within 700ft of the ground before the flight crew realised they had not lowered the plane’s undercarriage.The airline and the Australian Transport Safety Bureau have launched investigations into the October 26 incident. The pilots are due to be interviewed by authorities on Friday.

JETBLUE Airways is offering a $US599 ($718) one-month pass for unlimited travel in a bid to get more passengers airborne and jump-start a sluggish summer for the airline industry.The pass, valid until August 21, allows holders to visit any of the airline’s 56 destinations. The pass is valid between September 8 and October 8 this year with no blackout dates and with every available seat up for grabs.
VIRGIN Blue says it is working with Queensland Health in relation to fears passengers may have been exposed to potentially deadly bacteria in chicken wraps.The investigation is confined to a supply of chicken wraps the airline received from a manufacturer between May and June 2009, which may have contained a bacteria known as Listeria.A Virgin Blue spokeswoman said it is believed that other southeast Queensland companies were also provided with the chicken wraps from the manufacturer.

THE electrical smell that caused a Southwest Airlines Co flight to make an unexpected landing on Sunday was caused by a coffee maker in the back of the aircraft, a company spokesman said.The coffee maker was in the back galley of the Boeing 737 plane, which held 131 passengers and five crew members.The aircraft was examined and put back into service, Southwest spokesman Chris Mainz said.

VIRGIN Blue has checked all Boeing 737 aircraft in its fleet after the nose wheel of a jet fell off on the runway in Melbourne on Saturday.The airline said today the axle had sheered on the right nose wheel, causing the wheel to fall off.”We are satisfied that there was no risk to safety and we took immediate steps to return the aircraft to the terminal and commenced investigations with the safety authorities and Boeing as to why this incident occurred,” an airline spokeswoman said.

SOUTHWEST Airlines said one of its Boeing 737 jets was forced to make an emergency landing near Charlestown, West Virginia yesterday, after passengers discovered a hole in the plane’s fuselage.The football-sized hole appeared during a flight from Nashville to Baltimore prompting the cabin to depressurize and forcing the plane to land.“All 126 passengers and crew of five onboard landed safely,” the firm said in a statement.
A SLANGING match has broken out between Jetstar and Air New Zealand after the Australian airline claimed its troubled Kiwi launch had been sabotaged by dirty tricks.The Qantas subsidiary has had a bumpy ride since the launch of its New Zealand schedule last month, with complaints of late and cancelled flights, rude staff and dozens of New Zealanders turned away for failing to check in early enough.The airlines started trading barbs after Jetstar chief executive Bruce Buchanan accused Air New Zealand of attempting to sabotage his airline, which has replaced Qantas in New Zealand with 84 domestic return flights a week.
