MELBOURNE has eclipsed Sydney as the nation’s No. 1 tourism destination for sport, culture, shopping, theatre, restaurants, bars and nightlife, a new survey shows. The survey of 1200 Australians found that was judged the shopping capital and was rated highly for its cafe, bar and nightclub environment.Victoria came first for regional food and wine. But the state rated fourth in world-class natural attractions, behind Queensland, Northern Territory and New South Wales. It also came fourth on unique history and heritage attractions, the Tourism Victoria survey shows.Tourism Minister Tim Holding said it was clear that Victoria and Melbourne were the best-performing state and city in Australia.Mr Holding said Melbourne had recently overtaken Sydney as the most lucrative market for domestic tourists. For the year ending in March, domestic overnight visitors spent $4.7 billion in Melbourne. This was $135 million more than in Sydney, he said.”Recent tourism figures show that Melbourne and regional Victoria are bucking the downward trend in numbers,” he said. “We don’t have the Barrier Reef or a Harbour Bridge.”But we have a great variety of tourism offerings that make Melbourne and regional Victoria so appealing to visitors around Australia and overseas.”Our reputation for shopping, theatre, world-class food and wine, and the best sporting and cultural events make Melbourne the envy of the world.”The survey was conducted in June and interviewees were asked to select the best city in eight areas and the best state or territory in six others.
